For Brianna Lewis, data is more than a tool for analysis—it’s a bridge to understanding and empowering communities. As a UNT Health student at The University of North Texas Health Science Center (UNTHSC), Brianna is driven by the belief that effective public health begins with listening, learning, and using data to create solutions that are truly community-centered.
Brianna’s interest in public health was sparked by a desire to address the health disparities she witnessed growing up in Fort Worth, Texas. With a background in biology and a deep commitment to social impact, she chose to specialize in epidemiology—a field where data informs not only research but real-world change.
Throughout her graduate studies, Brianna has focused on using data to identify and address health inequities. Her work in maternal health, chronic disease prevention, and health education reflects her mission to ensure that all communities—especially those historically underserved—are seen, heard, and supported.
What sets Brianna apart is how she interprets and applies data. Rather than viewing numbers as abstract metrics, she sees them as reflections of people’s lived experiences. Her research goes beyond the surface, highlighting how social, economic, and environmental factors contribute to health outcomes. This perspective allows her to craft data-driven recommendations that are both actionable and grounded in empathy.
Brianna collaborates with academic mentors and community partners to design research projects that are inclusive and relevant. She ensures that findings are not only shared in academic settings but also translated into language and tools that community members can understand and use. Her goal is to turn insights into impact—empowering residents to advocate for themselves and make informed health decisions.
Beyond her research, Brianna also plays a vital role in mentoring students and supporting outreach initiatives. She believes that building trust within communities starts with showing up, listening actively, and being a consistent advocate for equitable change.
As she prepares to transition from student to professional, Brianna envisions a future where public health systems are more responsive and data is used not just for reporting, but for transformation. Her work at UNTHSC reflects a growing movement of students who are reshaping how data is used in health care—placing communities, and their stories, at the center.
Through research, leadership, and service, Brianna Lewis is proving that data, when used thoughtfully, has the power to uplift and empower entire communities.
